United Because of Water
Official letterhead of the Republic of Cameroon carried an application for a borehole and potable water from the Bafut subdivision of the Bawum village. “We are a community greatly deprived … the streams do not meet health standards … and are instead a source of water-borne diseases.”
The letter strongly appealed to FahMiyanwi to come to their aid and “give our community life.” An easy appeal to answer, but a difficult one to carry out. Third-world countries are challenged with a lack of systems in place and resources to perform services. An extra challenge was present in this particular case because the village was bitterly divided.
Local groups began to navigate the divide. Meetings and minutes reflected apologies and attempts to steady the waves. As with any project, the people have a stake in the process. It was agreed that this community would fund one percent of the total cost (currently between $35,000 and $40,000 USD) and construct the tanks. FahMiyanwi would in return provide them with pipes and carry the project through.
As they rolled toward completion, the community became united once again. They did receive “life” not only because of water, but because their brotherly love had been restored.
Mbebali Bafut Project Cost: $28,500; Project Impact: Population 1490 and 310 households.
